What is a projector?
A projector, also called a beamer or projection device, is an electronic device that projects images and video onto a surface such as a wall, a ceiling or a special projection screen. The device receives a video signal and enlarges it via a light source into a large picture surface. Depending on the distance between the projector and the surface, you can set the image to the size you want, from a compact 60-inch display to an impressive screen of up to 200 inches or more.
Modern projectors are equipped with powerful LED or laser light sources, support high resolutions such as Full HD and 4K, and increasingly come with built-in smart features such as projector WiFi, Bluetooth and streaming apps. That makes a projector much more than a simple display device. It's a versatile piece of technology that lets you create a large, bright projection on almost any surface at home, at the office or on the go.
What can you do with projectors?
A projector is one of the most versatile devices you can have in your home. From watching movies to meetings, and from gaming to sports: the uses are wide-ranging and vary from pure entertainment to professional purposes. Below you'll find an overview of the most popular ways to use a projector.
- Home cinema: project movies and series onto a big screen in your living room and enjoy a real cinema experience without leaving the house.
- Gaming: play your favorite games on a large projected image for an immersive and impressive gaming experience.
- Watching sports: follow matches and sporting events on a large projection screen together with friends or family, as if you were right there in the stadium.
- Presentations: use a projector at the office or school to show presentations, reports, and visuals clearly and neatly to a group.
- Outdoor cinema: project images onto an outside wall or a screen in the garden for a unique movie night under the stars.
- Streaming: connect your projector to streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, or Disney+ via WiFi and watch content on a big screen right away.
- Sharing photos and memories: show vacation photos or videos of special moments on a large projected screen during a family evening or party.
Different projectors
A projector comes in all shapes and sizes, and for just about every situation there's a model that perfectly matches your needs and use. Your choice depends on what you want to use the projector for, how much space you have and what image quality you expect. There's a compact model for on the go, a powerful version for the living room and a professional device for business environments. Below you can read more about the different types of projectors available.
Home cinema projector
A home cinema projector is specially designed to create a full movie experience in your own living room. This type of projector stands out with a high light output, sharp image quality in Full HD or 4K and excellent colour reproduction, so every film, series or sports match comes to life on a large projection screen.
Many models come with built-in speakers, HDMI connections and smart features like WiFi and Bluetooth, so you can easily connect to a soundbar, games console or streaming service. A home cinema projector is the ideal choice if you want to enjoy cinema quality without having to leave the house.
Mini projector
A mini projector is a compact and lightweight projector that you can easily take along, wherever you go. Thanks to its small size, this type of projector fits effortlessly in a backpack or bag, making it perfect for use on the go, on holiday or at a friend's place.
Despite its handy size, a mini projector delivers surprisingly good images on any wall or ceiling, which also makes it ideal for use in the bedroom. Connect the projector wirelessly to your smartphone or laptop via WiFi or Bluetooth and you'll have a big screen at your fingertips within seconds, wherever you are.
Presentation projector
A presentation projector is designed for use in the office, the meeting room or a classroom. This type of projector displays slides, reports, charts and other visual content clearly and sharply on a large surface, so everyone in the room can follow along easily.
A presentation projector is usually compact, easy to set up and comes with multiple connections like HDMI and USB, so you can quickly connect it to a laptop or tablet. Thanks to its bright projection, this type of projector also performs well in rooms where not all the light can be dimmed, making it extra practical for a professional environment.
Professional projector
A professional projector is built for demanding environments where high standards are set for picture quality, brightness and reliability. Think of large meeting rooms, event venues, museums or auditoriums where a powerful and stable picture is essential. This type of projector has a very high light output measured in lumens, a long light source lifespan and advanced connection options for professional audiovisual setups.
A professional projector delivers a bright and sharp picture even in well-lit rooms and is designed to handle long and intensive use without any issues. For companies and organizations that want to get the most out of their presentations and events, this is the most suitable type of projector.
What should you look out for when buying a projector?
There are many smartwatch brands and each brand sets different priorities. One brand focuses on a broad app ecosystem and smart features, while another focuses on sports tracking, battery life and accurate sensors. That's why it's smart to first decide what matters most to you: do you mainly want to track your workouts, analyze your sleep and monitor your health, or do you want more smart features like calling, notifications and paying from your wrist.
Also look at compatibility with your smartphone and operating system, the quality of the app you sync with, and how often the brand releases updates. At TechPunt you'll find Xiaomi smartwatches, among others, giving you plenty of smart features for great value for money. Xiaomi often combines a modern design with practical tracking and a user-friendly app experience.

How do I choose the best projector for my home?
Choosing the best projector for your home starts with an honest look at your own situation. Think about the space where you want to use the projector, how much light is present, at what distance you'll place the projector and what you mainly want to watch. A projector for the living room has different requirements than a compact projector for the bedroom, and a movie lover looks for different specs than someone who mainly watches sports or games.
For the living room, you'll preferably choose a model with high light output, a resolution of at least Full HD and good connectivity via HDMI and WiFi. If you want an impressive home cinema experience, a 4K-supporting projector with HDR support is the most future-proof choice. For the bedroom, a compact, quiet and user-friendly projector is often preferable, so you can easily set it up and enjoy a picture on the ceiling or a nearby wall.
For home use, the Xiaomi projectors we offer at TechPunt are an excellent choice. The Xiaomi projectors combine a sleek design with smart features, built-in Android TV and crisp picture quality, all at a very sharp price. The Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2, for example, is ideal for the living room thanks to its powerful light output, full Android TV integration and automatic keystone correction.
