Fans

Fans get the air moving, so your body can release its heat and a hot day becomes bearable again. At TechPunt you can choose from standing models, tower fans, air circulators and compact desk fans, all with an energy-efficient DC motor and control via your phone. A two-year warranty and the lowest-price guarantee in the Netherlands come standard.

Fans for every room

The fans in our range fall into four types, each suited to a different kind of space. They come from Xiaomi, SmartMi and Sothing, brands you'll often come across in the home and living category and that earn their keep with technology you'd normally only find in the higher price range.

These are the four directions you can choose from:

  • Pedestal fan: blows at eye level, rotates up to 120 degrees and moves the most air. The most versatile choice for the living room and bedroom.
  • Tower fan: slim and upright, fits in a corner and spreads the air across its full height, up to 150 degrees wide.
  • Air circulator: blows a concentrated stream up to thirteen metres far, setting the air in an entire room or even a whole floor in motion.
  • Desk and on the go: compact fans with a battery, for next to your keyboard or around your neck.

Almost everything can be controlled through the Xiaomi Home app, with a timer and a night mode, and by voice with Google Assistant or Alexa. So if you already have a smart speaker at home, you can switch the fan on without getting up.

Where should you place a fan?

You place a fan right where you're sitting, because it works on your skin and not on the room. The airflow makes moisture on your skin evaporate, and that feels like cooling down, even when the thermometer barely moves. Pointed straight at you and on a fixed setting works better than oscillating, because your body doesn't get time to warm back up in between.

The second spot that works is by an open window, as soon as it's cooler outside than inside. That's usually late in the evening and early in the morning: let the cool air blow in then, and keep windows and curtains on the sunny side closed during the day.

Not sure whether it's already cooled down outside? Then the hygrometers for indoor and outdoor use give you the answer at a glance. And since a fan needs to be where you are, a model with a battery is no luxury: you can take it along to the garden, the balcony or the guest room.

When should you choose a powerful fan?

You choose a powerful fan for a large or open space, where you want to get the air moving across more metres. The measure for that is the air output in cubic metres per hour: the tower models sit around 541 m³/h, and the most powerful standing and circulating models reach up to 1,224 and 1,440 m³/h, with a range of up to thirteen metres.

For a bedroom or home workspace you don't need that, and a model with lots of settings matters more. In an open kitchen-living room or an attic you do, because there the air has to cover a distance before you feel anything.

If it still feels stuffy despite everything, moisture is at play, and the dehumidifiers for a damp room will help you more than extra wind.

How quiet is a quiet fan in practice?

A quiet fan stays below 30 decibels on the lowest setting, and that's exactly where our models land: 27.9 and 28.6 decibels at their quietest, 30 decibels for the mid-range standing model. For comparison: below 30 decibels counts as whisper-quiet, and you won't even notice it in a bedroom.

That's thanks to the brushless DC motor that all models in this collection share. At 15 to 25 watts, it uses considerably less than a classic AC motor, runs quieter and can be adjusted steplessly up to a hundred settings instead of three.

The more settings, the greater the chance there's one that does just enough without keeping you awake. If it leaves your throat dry at night, the humidifiers for the bedroom and elsewhere offer a nice counterbalance.

When should you choose an electric fan?

You choose an electric fan when you want the cooling to come with you, instead of having to go to the fan yourself. Think of a compact model next to your keyboard, a rechargeable mini for your bag, or a version you hang around your neck that keeps your hands free.

They all run on a battery, so you don't need a power outlet on the patio, on the train or at a festival. They're too small for a whole room, and that's not what they're made for either: this is personal cooling at fifty centimeters' distance, right where the windchill effect does its work.

If you'd rather make the air in a room healthier than just get it moving, take a look at our range of air purifiers.

A Good-Looking Fan That Fits Your Interior

A good-looking fan stands out for three months of the year, so it deserves to be seen. Our models are sleek and light in color, with anodized aluminum and a slim stand instead of the usual black plastic with a logo on it.

Also handy: most pedestal models are height-adjustable and the display on the base can be dimmed, so you don't have a little light glowing next to you in the evening. The desk models come in soft shades and the neck fan looks like a pair of headphones. That makes a difference, because a fan you find attractive is one you're more likely to switch on than tuck away in the closet.
