If you're torn between two models, first look at the square meters of your room and only then at extra features. Below you'll find the pros and cons of each air purifier.
1. Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Pro: all-rounder for the living room
The Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Pro is an all-rounder for the living room, because with a CADR of 500 m³/h it effectively covers 35 to 60 m². The filter combines three layers: a pre-filter, a high-efficiency filter that captures 99.97% of particles at 0.3 µm, and a layer of activated carbon to tackle odors.
An OLED display shows the air quality, and in the Xiaomi Home app you set the mode and see when the filter needs replacing.
- Upside: enough capacity for a spacious living room, even if it flows into a dining area.
- Upside: sensors for PM2.5 and PM10, so the automatic mode also responds to larger particles like pollen.
- Upside: 33.7 dB(A) in night mode, so it can keep running through the night.
- Downside: alongside the filter, it uses negative ionization, so if you don't want an ionizer, pick a different model.
- Downside: at the highest setting, the noise rises to 65 dB(A).
Choose the Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Pro if you're looking for one air purifier for the room where you spend most of your day.
2. Xiaomi Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6 with five sensors and UV-C
The Xiaomi Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6 has five sensors and a UV-C module, and thereby measures not only PM2.5 but also PM1, dust, temperature and humidity. With a CADR of 443 m³/h and a formaldehyde CADR of 218 m³/h, it covers a space of 29 to 50 m².
The five-layer system combines a pre-filter, a high-efficiency filter, activated carbon, UV light and negative ions.
- Upside: the PM1 sensor also measures particles smaller than 1 micrometer, so in the app you can see what's happening in the finest fraction.
- Upside: a separate formaldehyde CADR of 218 m³/h for gases and odors.
- Upside: 32 dB(A) in sleep mode at a power of 40 W.
- Downside: negative ions are part of the purification system.
- Downside: with a maximum of 50 m², it has less range than the 4 Pro.
The Xiaomi Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6 is the logical choice if you want to track air quality by particle size in the app.
3. Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Lite: lots of CADR for a low price
The Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Lite delivers a lot of CADR for a low price: 360 m³/h for effective coverage of 25 to 43 m². The footprint is smaller than a sheet of A4, so it fits next to a sofa or cabinet. In night mode, Xiaomi measures 33.4 dB(A).
- Upside: plenty of capacity for an average living room or a large bedroom.
- Upside: the small footprint takes up little floor space.
- Upside: control via the Xiaomi Home app, with a notification when the filter needs replacing.
- Downside: a simpler LED display instead of the OLED screen of the 4 Pro.
- Downside: at the highest setting it makes up to 61 dB(A).
Choose the Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Lite if you want to get the basics right without paying for extra sensors or UV-C.
4. Xiaomi Mijia Smart Air Purifier Max for open spaces up to 108 m²
The Xiaomi Mijia Smart Air Purifier Max is made for open spaces of 63 to 108 m² and reaches a measured CADR of 1006.5 m³/h. It works with two filters, top and bottom, each with a pre-filter, a high-efficiency layer and activated carbon, supplemented by two UV-C modules. Thanks to the castors, you can roll it from the living room to the bedroom.
- Upside: one device for a living room, open kitchen and dining area together.
- Upside: despite its power, only 19.1 dB(A) in sleep mode.
- Upside: a formaldehyde CADR of 240.5 m³/h for cooking odors and gases from new materials.
- Downside: during maintenance you replace two filters instead of one.
- Downside: for a single bedroom or home office it's oversized.
With the Xiaomi Mijia Smart Air Purifier Max you cover your entire living space with a single device.
5. Xiaomi Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6 Plus for large homes
The Xiaomi Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6 Plus is designed for large homes and, according to Xiaomi, covers up to 91 m², based on a rated CADR of 760 m³/h. In Xiaomi's measurement the CADR came out at 810 m³/h. Two fans, five sensors and a UV-C module make it the larger version of the Mijia 6.
- Upside: it fills the gap between the Mijia 6 and the Max, for spaces over 50 m² that aren't 108 m² in size.
- Upside: the same five sensors as the Mijia 6, so you also get insight into PM1.
- Upside: in a lab test by Xiaomi it removed 99.99% of the H1N1 flu virus from the air within one hour.
- Downside: the 91 m² is Xiaomi's most generous calculation, so if you have allergies you should count on a smaller space.
Choose the Xiaomi Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6 Plus for a spacious living room with an open kitchen for which the Max has more capacity than you need.
6. Xiaomi Smart Purifier Elite with 600 m³/h CADR and UV-C
The Xiaomi Smart Purifier Elite combines 600 m³/h CADR with UV-C LEDs against bacteria in the air flowing through the device. Xiaomi states an effective coverage of 42 to 72 m², and up to 125 m² at 2 air changes per hour. TÜV Rheinland has tested how well it removes allergens from the air.
- Upside: 20.2 dB(A) in sleep mode, low for a device with this capacity.
- Upside: a pollen CADR of 592 m³/h, which makes it a great fit for hay fever season.
- Downside: on the highest setting the noise rises to 68 dB.
- Downside: the 125 m² applies at 2 air changes per hour, well below the 4.8 air changes per hour used by the American standard.
The Xiaomi Smart Purifier Elite suits a living room of up to about 70 m² where the device needs to stay quiet at night.
7. Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact for small bedrooms
The Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact is made for small bedrooms of 16 to 27 m² and delivers a CADR of 230 m³/h. The noise ranges from 18.3 dB(A) on the lowest setting to 47.4 dB(A) at full power. TÜV Rheinland has certified the filter for blocking allergens.
- Upside: at 18.3 dB(A), the lowest stated nighttime level in this top 10.
- Upside: even at full power it stays below 50 dB(A).
- Upside: the allergen certification from TÜV Rheinland.
- Downside: not enough capacity for a living room.
Choose the Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact for the bedroom, kids' room or home office.
8. Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 for the medium-sized room
The Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 suits a medium-sized room of 28 to 48 m² and reaches a CADR of 400 m³/h. According to Xiaomi, a 20 m² bedroom is fully purified in about 10 minutes, with a night value of 32.1 dB(A). Besides the filter, it works with negative ionization.
- Plus: more capacity than the 4 Lite, for rooms up to 48 m².
- Plus: an OLED display showing the current air quality.
- Plus: 32.1 dB(A) in night mode.
- Minus: the ionization function makes it less suitable for anyone wanting to avoid ionization.
- Minus: in terms of coverage it's close to the 4 Lite and the Mijia 6, so the difference is mainly in the display and finish.
Go for the Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 if the 4 Lite offers just a bit too little coverage and the 4 Pro is more than you need.
9. Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier for Pets against hair and odor
The Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier for Pets focuses on the hair and odor of dogs and cats and reaches a CADR of 230 m³/h for particles and 237.4 m³/h for pollen. The filter has an odor formula to tackle pets' body odor and waste odor, and the 360° suction captures floating hair and skin flakes. An anti-stress algorithm lets the fan change speed gradually, so pets don't get startled.
- Plus: the filter is tuned to pet odor rather than just dust.
- Plus: gentle speed changes that won't startle pets.
- Plus: compact enough for the corner with the basket or the litter box.
- Minus: with coverage of 16 to 27 m², it's too small for a large living room.
The Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier for Pets works best if your pet mainly sleeps or eats in one room.
10. Xiaomi SmartMi Air Purifier P1 with interchangeable filters
The Xiaomi SmartMi Air Purifier P1 works with interchangeable filters, so you can fit a different filter depending on the season or situation. With the pollen filter it reaches a CADR of 250 m³/h for rooms of 17.5 to 30 m², and according to SmartMi the H13 True HEPA filter captures 99.98% of particles from 80 nanometers. The noise level ranges between 19 and 49 dB and the power is a maximum of 30 W.
- Plus: besides the pollen filter, there's a separate filter for households with pets.
- Plus: works with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.
- Plus point: 19 dB on the lowest setting.
- Downside: you control it with the Smartmi Link app and not with the Xiaomi Home app used by the other models.
Choose the Xiaomi SmartMi Air Purifier P1 if you want to match the filter to the season, for example a pollen filter in spring.
What should you look for when choosing the best air purifier?
When choosing the best air purifier, you look at four points that you work out from the specs yourself. Manufacturers present their figures in different ways, which means two models with the same number of square meters on the box can actually differ quite a bit in practice. These four points put them on an even footing:
- CADR per square meter: divide the CADR by your ceiling height times 4.8 for the number of m² in which the device refreshes the air 4.8 times per hour, the standard of the American trade association AHAM. A model with 500 m³/h comes out at roughly 40 m² with a 2.6 m ceiling, so for an open space of around 100 m² you'll want to look at an air purifier for 100 m².
- Filter class: according to the European standard EN 1822, an H13 filter captures at least 99.95% of the hardest particles to filter, and an H14 filter at least 99.995%. The figure of 99.97% at 0.3 µm follows an American definition. Having enough capacity for your room matters more than a higher filter class.
- Ionizer and UV-C: an ionizer makes dust clump together, but can produce ozone. If you want to rule that out, choose from the air purifiers without an ionizer. UV-C works inside the device on the air that flows through it.
- Noise in night mode: compare the lowest dB(A) value for night and the highest for daytime. In this top 10 the stated night values range from 18.3 to 33.7 dB(A), so with a quiet air purifier also keep an eye on the maximum noise.
These four points also let you compare air purifiers that aren't in this top 10. Always start with the room, because an air purifier with a good filter but too little capacity won't move the air through the filter often enough.
